Should You Leave Your Australian Shepherd Pet Alone at Home?
We love our work and it keeps us busy from day to day, but we also love our Australian Shepherd Pet. We are now caught in a dilemma on what to do with our Aussie when we are busy at work. As responsible dog owners, we must see to it that our dogs are safe the moment we step out of our house and leave for work.
Should we decide to leave our pet dog alone at home for a period of time, we need to make sure that it is happy and comfortable and should feel that way until we come back to our houses. The maximum amount of time that we should leave our dogs alone at home should not exceed 4 hours though.
Remember that your Aussie will always love to follow you around and your absence will be something that will agitate your dog, but if you make it a routine leaving your dog often, the dog will feel secure and less agitated every time you leave it alone at home.
There are some important things that you should do before you decide on leaving your Aussie alone in your household. Giving him some exercise for at least 30 minutes will rid him of excess energy and make him rest the moment you leave him in your house. If you do not have enough time to let him exercise, you may let it run freely for 10 minutes just to tire him.
Make sure you do not starve your dog and provide him with a meal if you are away during his meal time.
Although dog cages are not that advisable, it may come in handy if you are leaving a puppy alone for more than 4 hours. Dog owners often have difficulty containing their dogs in cages. This is because they associate the cage to a time when they leave the dog alone. What dog owners must do is place their dogs in the cage even when they do not leave the house but only for short periods and eventually extend the period of time they would have them in the cage.
If you really do not have the option but to leave your Australian Shepherd pet alone in the house, place the kennel in a quiet place inside your house, and you may also provide him with a toy which he can chew on so he won’t get bored. In as much as we want to keep both our jobs and our dogs, we need to be responsible dog owners.
