Basic Australian Shepherd Information

Before one decides to get an Australian Shepherd, he must first have the basic Australian Shepherd information.

Australian Shepherd existed in Australia in the 1800’s.  They were trained to guard cattle herds.  However, Aussie’s intelligence earned him the reputation of being a search and rescue dog and a service dog.  It is has a great sense of humor and is capable of pulling off a practical joke.  Aussie’s are loyal and protective.  They are not receptive to strangers and will most likely growl or bark at your guests.   It is best to advise your visitors not to intimidate or tease your Australian Shepherd.

If you are an active person then the Australian Shepherd will be a good choice if not the best.  Australian Shepherds are quite energetic.  If you come home tired from work and would like to relax, Aussie’s will jump over you and invite you to a wrestling match.  They love to play Frisbees and enjoy running around.  Thus, it is not advisable to have an Australian Shepherd in an apartment where space is restricted.  Aussie’s like active games so be sure to have a good space where you can wrestle with him.

Aussie’s can be trained and it is good to train them while they are young.  Since they are intelligent, it is easy to train them to be obedient.  When training an Aussie give a consistent and solid command and don’t forget to establish clearly to him that you are his master.

It is easy to groom an Australian Shepherd.  You only need to brush his coat regularly, trim his nails, clean his ears and brush his teeth.  Also, bath your Australian Shepherd only when you need to do so.  Before grooming your Aussie, be sure to consult your veterinarian first to avoid mishandling.

These are just a few of the basic Australian Shepherd information one must have before getting an Australian Shepherd.
